Do you think there should or should not be a law that would ban the possession of handguns, except by the police and other authorized persons?

Gallup Polls has been asking annually about banning possession of handguns since 1979 and first asked in 1959.  Amazingly the high mark for this question was in 1959 when 60% of respondents were allegedly in favor of a ban on the possession of handguns (called revolver or pistol in the original poll).  But what is more amazing when respondents were asked in 2020 about banning the possession of handguns the results hit an almost all time low at 25% for banning handguns.  And 74% of respondents were against banning handguns and 1% had no opinion.

Personal safety and protection are cited as the number one reason for owning a handgun.  Of course many of the newly styled questions about guns by Gallup are phrased,  “Thinking about mass shootings in recent years”.  I’m not so sure founder George Gallup in 1935 anticipated his namesake would begin with leading questions designed to get a desired response.
